Traces of Salmonella Found in Bags of Spinach

Metz Fresh announced a recall of bagged spinach, Wednesday, after routine testing detected traces of salmonella.

The company has not received any reports of illness thus far. And Metz Fresh is working with federal health officials to find the source of the salmonella contamination.

This recall is nearly a year after an outbreak of illness was traced back to a batch of bagged California spinach tainted with a deadly strain of E. coli bacteria.

In a statement, Metz Fresh said the salmonella was detected in a single sample of spinach at the processing plant. The company said it decided to recall spinach from three processing lines at the plant as a precaution, since all three lines were handling produce from the same field.

After lab analysis confirmed salmonella, the company decided to announce a recall on Tuesday.

The recalled spinach involves fresh spinach packed under the Metz Fresh label with tracking codes: 12208114, 12208214 or 12208314. The spinach was packed in 10- and 16-ounce bags, as well as 4- and 10-pound cartons.
